Pre-development testing of a site in Bohola townland, c. 1km west-north-west of Bohola village in County Mayo, was carried out on 8 December 2015. The proposed development consisted of the construction of a dry shed, a concrete apron surrounding the shed and a rainwater soakaway. Due to its location in proximity to a number of recorded monuments, in particular a church (MA071-077001) and graveyard (MA071-077002) located 45m away to the east, Gerry Walsh, Archaeologist, Forward Planning, Mayo County Council, recommended pre-development testing of those portions of the proposed development site not already disturbed. A roughly rectangular area measuring 26.8m north-south and 16.4-18m wide had been stoned up by 0.3m in the north-west corner of the site. Within this area a concrete strip foundation was also visible. An area to the east of this appeared to have been reduced and/or disturbed in the recent past.
The testing consisted of the excavation (by machine) of four trenches located to best cover that portion of the site not already disturbed. The trenches measured 30.5m, 14.5m, 14m and 10m long respectively, 1.9-2.4m wide and 0.8-1.75m deep.
Testing revealed a site which had been extensively reclaimed and developed in the last 20 years or so. The northern part of the site had been filled with quarried stone and fill, above peat and natural subsoil. The remainder had been reclaimed with in excess of 1m of fill visible below a thin layer of topsoil and above peat with natural subsoil below. Only plastic and one modern glass fragment were recovered from the excavation. Nothing of archaeological significance was in evidence.
