Monitoring of groundworks at a development at Abbey Road, Ballinrobe, Co. Mayo, was carried out on 18 and 19 June 2015. The proposed development consisted of the construction of a single storey extension to the rear of the Teagasc Office, nine car parking spaces and all associated site works.
The monitoring was required due to the location of the development site within the constraint for the town of Ballinrobe (MA118-022) and its proximity to the graveyard (MA118-022003) surrounding the nearby Augustinian Abbey (MA118-022002).
The planned extension and car parking spaces were located in landscaped lawn areas beside the Teagasc building.
Nothing of archaeological significance was uncovered during the monitoring of the groundworks. The areas reduced showed evidence of extensive modern disturbance which appeared to be associated with the construction of the building, which was completed c. 1984.
