Monitoring of the groundworks in advance of the construction of a roadĀ for forest harvesting was carried out at Piperstown, Co. Louth, in October and
November 2015. The total length of the road was 884m.
The site is located in the vicinity of a complex of medieval monuments.
Tress were felled in a corridor 20m wide, the topsoil strip was 5m wide and a
drainage trench was excavated along the side of the roadway.
The soil profile in general was 0.3-0.4m of silty clay; in places where there
was a slope, the excavation went to 0.6m deep. No material of an
archaeological nature was disclosed by the monitor.
