An assessment took place of the site of a proposed housing development at Tankardsrock, Kilkerley, Co Louth. Further information (Ref No. 15474) was requested by Louth County Council prior to making a decision on Planning and section 4 required an archaeological assessment of the site including geophysical survey. The archaeological assessment was carried out on behalf of Bespoke Trustees LtdĀ on 6 October 2015; geophysical survey was not undertaken as ground conditions were considered unsuitable for survey by the geophysicist. The site is located close to LH006-037 and LH007-102. Thirteen trenches were excavated in the area of the proposed development, all apart from two extending north-east/south-west and parallel to each other.
A number of small pits containing charcoal and burnt bone were exposed in Trenches 1, 3, 6 & 13 (Archaeological Areas 1-4). As the features will be impacted upon during construction, it is recommended that they be fully excavated in advance of construction.
