An assessment took place of a proposed extension to St Joseph’s Hospital at Townparks, Ardee, Co. Louth on behalf of HSE Estates Dublin North East. The assessment was carried out in response to a Further Information request from Louth County Council on foot of a planning application (Ref: 15318). The proposed development is to be located to the rear of St Joseph’s Hospital, which is a protected structure (LH017-35), previously known as Ardee House and built in 1780.
The development is located directly outside of the archaeological zone of potential associated with the medieval town of Ardee, LH017-101. The hospital is directly to the west of a 17th-century artillery bastion (LH017:101/05). No works will be taking place in proximity to the bastion and there will therefore be no impact on it from the proposed development.
Three test trenches were excavated within the footprint of the proposed extension and these failed to identify any features of an archaeological nature.
