The site, St Peter’s School, Bolton St, Drogheda, County Louth, is located within the Zone of Archaeological Potential for Drogheda (LH024-041), adjacent to a section of the town wall and the building itself is a protected structure – DB294. Planning permission was granted by Drogheda Borough Council for alterations and refurbishment to the school (Ref: 14/28), part of which is the insertion of a new sewage pipe connecting the school to the main sewer on Bolton Street. Due to the sensitive location of the development, particularly the proximity of the development to the town wall, Drogheda Borough Council have requested archaeological monitoring of the excavations of the sewer pipe trench, which was proposed to run parallel to and 4 m from the east facing façade of the school. The depth of the pipe trench ranged from 0.75 m at its northern end to 0.30 m to the south. As all of the excavation work was in either topsoil or modern made ground, nothing of archaeological significance was noted.
