A programme of testing was undertaken at Coolkeragh, Listowel in advance of the proposed construction of a commercial composting facility for the preparation and storage of composts on a 4.34h site to the immediate west of an existing farmyard. The proposed development will include a concrete reception area for the storage and composting of green waste materials and associated facilities. The upgrading of existing farm tracks and the creation of a new access road to the west of the existing farm road through a greenfield site to the north of the proposed composting facility will also form part of the development. The nearest monuments to the farmyard are located at the southern end of Coolkeragh townland and are listed as ringforts (KE010-020; KE005-090, KE005-088) and an enclosure (KE005-089).
Five test trenches were excavated to an average depth of 0.35m to a level below the natural boulder clay. Across all five trenches the topsoil consisted of dark brown stone-free peaty silt varying in depth from 0.25-0.3m. The northern end of Trench 4 contained re-deposited grey clay material that had been deposited during the construction of farm tracks to the north and east of the area proposed for development.
No features or finds of archaeological merit were found in any of the five trenches.
