As a condition for pre-afforestation approval at Coolgarriv, Killarney monitoring of the trench and mounding was required. A c.5ha area was monitored, a large level field of pasture with a stream along the western boundary and the Killarney to Tralee road on the eastern. In the western half of the field, two different areas of heat-fractured stone and charcoal-rich soil were found surviving to a depth of 0.4m. In both cases machine work was stopped and a minimum 20m buffer zone was established.
