Conservation and excavation of a portal tomb at Killaclohane, Milltown, Co. Kerry, The conservation works were necessitated by the danger of imminent collapse of the tomb and involved the removal of the capstone, righting of the leaning portal stones and replacement of the capstone. Excavation showed that the tomb had as complex history and that issues around the stability of the capstone had been addressed during the period of use of the tomb. The tomb produced cremated human remains, numerous pottery fragments, flint artefacts and a broken saddle quern. The pottery indicates that the tomb was in use from around 3,900BC to 3,300BC with a secondary use in the Middle Bronze Age. Analyses of the material from the tomb is ongoing and a full report will be published on completion.
