A programme of monitoring was carried out at Tuam, Co. Galway on behalf of Gas Networks Ireland. The project involved two gas connections along the Dublin Road connecting both the Mercy Convent National School and the Presentation National School into existing roadside gas infrastructure. Two open-cut trenches were mechanically excavated to accommodate the 125mm PE gas mains. Trench 1 to the Presentation school measured 20m in length, Trench 2 connecting the Mercy Convent was 15m in length. Both trenches were 0.6m wide and 1.1m deep and were laid across road, footpaths and a yard.
The trench locations were located in the vicinity of a number of known archaeological sites including the zone of notification for St. John’s Priory (GA029-184001---) and a religious house and high cross (GA029-184002---). Other sites in the vicinity include an Earthwork (GA029-206---), two Graveyards (GA029-018--- & GA029-189--) and a designed landscape feature (GA029-186---).
Nothing of archaeological significance was noted.
