An archaeological assessment, namely pre-development testing, was required by Galway Co Co in advance of construction of a domestic dwelling and associated treatment unit and garage at Leagaun, Moycullen, Co. Galway. The proposal site occupies a field immediately adjacent and north of the site of the Leagaun Standing Stone (GA068-037) and within an area purportedly quarried for sand in the late 1970s or 1980s. The entire site occupies an area of 0.21 ha with testing confined to the footprint of the house, garage and treatment unit. Four test trenches were opened using a mechanical excavator fitted with a grading bucket and operated under archaeological supervision. The trenches measured from 13.5 to 22 m long, 1.5 to 1.8 m wide, and 0.30 to 0.50 m deep. The stratigraphy was consistent in all trenches; namely topsoil, sandy loam, sand and glacial till. There was no indication that those parts of the site tested had been quarried for sand. No archaeological features, deposits or artefacts were revealed during testing.
