A tarmacadam surface was replaced within the precinct of Christchurch Cathedral. In total, approximately 530m square of damaged tarmac was removed, comprising the area around the main gate, the small car-park in front of the Chapter House and the route that leads to the western side of the precinct and the main entrance. This surface was mechanically removed under supervision and replaced with 10mm dense tarmacadam, laid to a depth of 60mm. This was compacted and the joints sealed with bitumen. The modern bedding from the tarmac, a stone and gravel deposit, was not removed. A section of original 18th-century kerbing that survives at the eastern end of the precinct, on the northern side of the Fishamble Street pedestrian gate, was re-exposed (but not re-laid). No features were exposed.
