Archaeological monitoring and excavation was undertaken at Broadstone, Dublin 7 between September 2015 through to October 2017 in association with the Luas Cross City Main Infrastructure Civil and Track Works. The work was carried out in accordance with Licence No. 15E0337, which was subsequently transferred; firstly to Matt Seaver and secondly to Mark Moraghan of Rubicon Heritage Services Ltd.

All construction groundworks associated with the planned LCC light rail system and the associated TU Dublin Broadstone Gate access roads and pedestrian plazas at Broadstone, Dublin 7 were monitored.

The archaeological excavation consisted of the recording of subsurface remains associated with the Broadstone Branch of the Royal Canal approach and harbour. In addition to the anticipated remains of the canal channel, harbour and associated infrastructure, the investigations revealed substantial remains of a relict 18th-century landscape including at least one definite roadway. This relict landscape had been sealed beneath the deep deposits imported onto it to platform the site and raise its level in preparation for the construction of the Broadstone Branch of the canal and its associated harbour.
