Monitoring took place, on behalf of Gas Networks Ireland, of the excavation of a trench across Church Avenue, Irishtown, Dublin to facilitate the installation of a 90PE valved gas pipeline from an existing gas main on the northern carriageway to a domestic property on the south of the road. The trench crossed ESB HV cables.

The works were located in close proximity to three sites including a settlement cluster (DU018-054---) and St. Matthew's Church of Ireland and associated graveyard (DU018-054001--- & 054002---). The work was undertaken on 22 August 2015.

The excavation of the trench revealed several north-south orientated modern services cutting across the trench at the edges of the road. The matrix within the trench was a homogenous gravel and sand deposit with large amounts of shells throughout. The cuts for the existing services were by and large not noticeable suggesting that the material excavated when they were laid was put back into the trench. This was not the case for the more recent ESB or communication cables which were surrounded by concrete and fine sand.

No archaeological features or deposits were encountered during the course of the work.
