Monitoring was carried out at Simmonscourt Road, Dublin 4 on behalf of Gas Networks Ireland. The works were located near DU018-063001---, Castle – tower house, DU018-063002---, Gatehouse. The project involved the installation of gas pipes and connection. The works comprised approx. 60m of a 63 PE gas main from the existing 125 PE main. The installation of the pipe was along carriageway, footpaths and driveway. The open cut trench was 0.3m wide by 0.6m deep.

The material excavated was topsoil that was revealed to a depth of between 0.15m and 0.5m. The topsoil had been disturbed in places by modern services and contained a large amount of tree roots. Below the topsoil there was a disturbed orange-brown sandy-clay deposit. This material contained infrequent amount of red-brick and crushed lime mortar and occasional sherds of post-medieval ceramic. Several modern services were identified crossing the line of the excavation. A small section approximately 4m long was excavated through the road surface. The top 0.4m of the trench was filled by road foundation material and backfill on top of a drainage pipe. Below this was a grey-brown silty-clay deposit that was not identified elsewhere during the excavation work.

Nothing of archaeological significance was noted during the course of the works.
