Test trenching took one day to complete and was carried out in advance of the construction of a two-storey office/retail unit and six 2.5-storey three-bedroom terraced townhouses.
A toothed bucket was used to excavate the test trenches, due to the very compact nature of all the soils encountered. It was attempted to excavate the trenches with a flat grading bucket, but it was not possible to remove any of the soil layers without the use of a toothed bucket.
The excavation of five test trenches within the area of proposed land take revealed no features of archaeological significance. Several very small (approximately 10–20mm in length) fragments of possible human bone were noted in a modern clay layer in Trench 5 after it had been removed from the trench. Visual inspection of this layer after excavation failed to reveal any larger bone fragments or additional archaeological artefacts.
Testing revealed made ground directly sealing a modern clay layer which in turn sealed a superficial geological deposit.
Test trenching failed to reveal any archaeological features.
