An assessment (including test trenching) took place of a proposed extension to Gardian House, Burrow Road, Portrane, Co. Dublin on 11 May 2015 on behalf of Mr Gerry and Ms Joan Bunting (c/o Oppermann Associates) in fulfillment of a further information request by Fingal County Council (F15A 10060). The site is located alongside DU008-03101-03 (St Catherine’s Church and Graveyard). The proposed development includes a small extension to the south and an increase in the height from a single to two stories. Three test trenches were excavated across the footprint of the proposed new extension to the south of the existing dwelling and along the proposed lines for new services/wastewater. The trenches all provided evidence to suggest that the site had been built up over the years with some 0.5-1.70 of topsoil and post-medieval garden soil identified above the natural sand. The post-medieval garden soil contained a small amount of animal bone, shell, small quantities of brown and black glazed earthenware and some small fragments of bottle glass. No archaeologically significant features or deposits were exposed.
