An assessment (test trenching) took place of the site of a proposed National School in Mullingar Co. Westmeath. Westmeath County Council propose to complete the Compulsory Purchase of a plot of land on Ardmore Road, Mullingar in order to rebuild Curraghmore National School (currently situated 2km to the north-east). The proposed development site is mostly located in Petitswood townland with the southern part in Ardmore townland. Nine trenches were excavated in the area of the proposed development, all running west-south-west/east-north-east. The natural creamy grey marl was exposed in all trenches directly below the sod. A substantial burnt mound spread/fulacht fiadh measuring 10m by 7m was identified at the south-west end of Trench 9 south of the townland boundary in Ardmore townland. As the proposed development will directly impact upon this archaeological site, it is recommended that it be fully excavated prior to development of the site.
