The pre-development testing took place in November 2015 and was recommended because the proposed site is located close to DU018-027, associated with the possible medieval settlement of Chapleizod.
Due to the local terrain and density of overgrowth, testing was limited to a series of trenches and test pits at the western end of the proposed development. Here glacial till was encountered at a depth of some 1.8m below ground level. Directly on top of this was some 1.4m of redeposited till, probably the result of the dumping of excavated material associated with the construction of the adjacent cottages in the early to mid-19th century and the construction of the ‘new’ entrance way into Clonbur House in the late 19th century.
No evidence was uncovered to suggest that the boundary wall was any older than the construction of the cottages.
