Pre-development testing was carried out at Cornerpark, Newcastle, Co. Dublin in response to a recommendation under ‘Condition 9’ of Planning Permission issued under Ref. SD15A/0193.

The proposed development site is located to the immediate north of Main Street in the village of Newcastle and is located within the Zone of Archaeological Potential for the village of Newcastle DU020-003/DU021–017.

A total of eight trenches were mechanically investigated across the test area which measured 518 linear metres. It was not possible to excavate four trenches due to the presence of a badger sett, low-hanging wires and a modern spoil heap.

No sites of definitive archaeological origin were identified during testing; however it was not possible to undertake all of the proposed investigations due to ground conditions. Furthermore while the field boundary identified in Trench 2 is likely post-medieval in origin, there is the potential for relict remains of burgage plots to survive.
