Pre-development testing was carried out at 5 Hanover Quay, which is located on the north side of the Grand Canal Basin, in response to planning conditions (Planning Ref.: DSDZ3866/14).
Five trenches were excavated across the area of the proposed development. All were excavated into the rubble backfill of 19th-century made ground. None of the trenches were bottomed as the depth of the backfill exceeded safe parameters for excavation (greater than 4.5m).
No deposits or features of archaeological significance were encountered to the depth of 4.5m
Given that a full programme of testing to the depth of the proposed works was not possible at Hanover Quay, there may be an adverse impact on previously unrecorded archaeological feature or deposits that have the potential to survive beneath the substantial made ground identified at the site. This will be caused by ground disturbances associated with the proposed development.
