Archaeological monitoring of ground reduction works for a proposed development at 51 John Street, Downpatrick was carried out in response to a planning condition imposed upon the development by Department of Environment: Historic Environment Division (DOE:HED). Monitoring was carried out in two phases: Phase 1 during 2014 after demolition of the modern office buildings which occupied the greater proportion of the development site and which proved that no archaeological remains survived within much of the site and Phase 2 during 2015 within the northern portion of the site.
Phase 2 monitoring revealed the existence of two post-medieval/modern well features and three subsoil -cut pits uncovered beneath modern ground surface.
