An archaeological evaluation was undertaken on behalf of Ards and North Down Borough Council in relation to a proposed art installation in the grounds of Bangor Abbey within the boundary of the designated Scheduled Monument DOW002:002 – St Malachy’s Wall. The scheme lies within an Area of Archaeological Potential with a high potential for sub-surface archaeological remains to survive, specifically associated with the historic Abbey site.
Monitored test trenching within the footprint of the art installation and proposed electrical cable trench was carried out over 1 day to reduced level dig of between 0.5–0.6m below ground level. Test trenching failed to identify any archaeological material and revealed that construction excavation will not extend beyond the depth of topsoil/overburden either within the footprint of the sculpture or the line of the proposed electric cabling.
