An archaeological evaluation was carried out prior to the proposed insertion of a new access road to Edenderry House, 133 Ballylesson Road, Lisburn.
A total of 5 targeted test trenches were to be excavated within the footprint of the proposed access lane; however permission was not obtained to access the land leading to Edenderry House within the north-west of the line of the proposed access land and, as such, Trenches 4 and 5 were not excavated. Additionally, the full extent of Trench 1 was not completed due to the presence of a modern cattle enclosure towards the south-east extent of the proposed line of the trench.
All trenches measured 1.8m wide and were excavated to glacial subsoil or the upper strata of archaeological features.
The evaluation uncovered four features: a possible post-hole [3005], a possible small pit [3007], a large pit [3010] and a ditch [3013]. All were located within Trench 3 which was excavated on lower ground within the middle of the proposed new access.
The evaluation remained incomplete due to access refusal, see Phase 2, AE/15/204.
