An archaeological evaluation was carried out prior to the redevelopment and construction of an extension to Dundonald Presbyterian Church, Chruch Green, Dundonald. The proposed development site is located within the area of archaeological potential for Dundonald. Dundonald Presbyterian Church and the adjacent former National School, which are both located within the red line boundary, are listed buildings, HB 025/05/004 and HB 025/05/009 respectively.
Monitoring took place of all ground works associated with the proposed development. The demolition of the existing extension revealed a retaining wall extending along the western side of the site. This was also removed and revealed the underlying material, which consisted of a layer of hardcore material relating to an adjacent access road varying in depth from 0.3-1m. The next phase of works consisted of ground reduction of the existing bank of material that extended north from the end of the former extension. This material appeared to represent the remains of the original slope within the site. Up to 1m depth of topsoil was removed from this area which gave way to naturally occurring subsoil, consisting primarily of a loose orange sand. The final phase of works was conducted within the area of the existing car park. Two service trenches were excavated and revealed hard surfaces coming off directly onto subsoil.
No archaeological deposits were identified during the course of the evaluation.
