An archaeological evaluation was carried out prior to the proposed construction of 10 dwellings on lands to the rear of Nos 13, 15 and 17 Forth Road and 10m north-west of Nos 7 and 13 Rathmore Road, Clonallon Road, Warrenpoint. The site is located on land adjacent to DOW 054:002, which is described in the SMR as a tree ring, a designed landscape feature of the 18th to 19th century.
Eight test trenches were excavated by a mechanical digger fitted with a toothless bucket. Each trench was located either across the footprint of a proposed dwelling or along access roads. All trenches measured approximately 1.8m wide and were excavated to glacial subsoil. The topsoil on the site, which was found to be between 0.3m – 0.75m in thickness, was a loose, friable, dark brown loam while the subsoil was a mid orange stony sandy clay.
No archaeological deposits were uncovered on the site.
