Pre-development testing of a site at the Glebe House and Gallery in Co. Donegal was carried out on 30 October 2015. The site was located in Glebe townland, c. 2km north-west of Churchill village. The proposed development consisted of the construction of a storage shed. The testing was a condition of planning and was required due to the proximity of an enclosure (DG044-024) located c. 22m to the north of the proposed development.
The site was located on the grounds of the Glebe House and Gallery, an OPW visitor centre which houses the Derek Hill collection, the artist having donated his former home and collection to the state. The new storage shed was located adjacent to an existing maintenance building. One end of the proposed site location was gravelled, while the remainder was wooded with birch, ash and conifers, planted in the last 30 years or so.
The testing consisted of the excavation of three trenches (by machine), located to best cover the proposed development area, especially that closest to DG044-024). The trenches measured 9m, 17m and 15.3m respectively; 1.3-2.1m wide and 0.25-0.6m deep. The testing revealed topsoil and modern interventions associated with the Glebe House and Gallery, i.e. quarried stone, sand, kerbing and concrete; above natural subsoil. Nothing of archaeological significance was in evidence.
