An archaeological evaluation was carried out prior to the proposed construction of a residential development at lands adjacent to 1, Fahan street, Derry.
A series of 7 test trenches were excavated within the area of development. In all of these trenches modern demolition was uncovered which represented the remains of the houses which previously existed on the site and which are shown on the 5th edition OS map. These houses were levelled to form the car park. The topography of the site is such that it appears likely that the hillside was scarped to construct the houses and possibly afterwards to level the site for the creation of the car park. It is likely therefore that previous construction and leveling within this site would have removed any potential archaeological remains which could have existed. In addition, the depth of demolition material which is a minimum of 1m lies below the formation level of the proposed development.
Nothing of archaeological significance was identified during the course of the evaluation.
