Tullylinkisay 1 was one of 11 sites excavated as part of the advanced works for the A31 Magherafelt Bypass. The excavation followed on from Trial Trenching and initial work for Strip/Map sample excavation undertaken by Fintan Walsh under licence AE/14/232. The site was uncovered during Strip/Map of Area J. It was located on the cusp of a low gravel ridge with an east-facing aspect. A geophysical survey (undertaken by Earthsound Geophysics under licence AE/14/113) highlighted linear and curvilinear trends and a circular anomaly interpreted as a possible burnt mound. The circular anomaly was resolved as an area of loose rock outcropping. Numerous isolated charcoal-rich pits were identified during topsoil stripping. This area was subsequently excavated in conjunction with archaeological features identified in the extension around Trench 164.

Archaeological features included one possible kiln, three large pits, five irregular pit features and two post-medieval field boundaries.

At the time of writing, post-excavation analysis had yet to begin.
