Killyneese 5 was one of 11 sites excavated as part of the advanced works for the A31 Magherafelt Bypass. The excavation followed on from Trial Trenching and initial work for Strip/Map sample excavation undertaken by Fintan Walsh under licence AE/14/232. The site was uncovered during trial trenching when archaeological deposits were recorded in Trenches 225, 229 and 230. A small oval feature was recorded in Trench 225. This trench was subsequently extended until a 10m buffer zone was established around the archaeological resource, c. 497 sq. m (Cutting 1). Circular features recorded in Trenches 229 and 230 resulted in an area of 976 sq. m being opened to establish the limits of the archaeological resource (Cutting 2).
Cutting 1
This Cutting contained a total of 12 features. These comprised a mix of irregularly-shaped pits and linear features. Five fragments of flint were recovered from two of the pits.
Cutting 2
This Cutting contained four features including a linear gully, two irregular pits and the remains of a post-medieval field boundary. No artefactual material was recovered from these features.
