There was an urgent need to repair and rebuild c. 35m of the 19th-century roadside wall that skirts the southern side of Kilbolane Castle, as the wall was buckling and in imminent danger of collapsing outwards onto the existing main road. Due to its proximity to the National Monument, being c.10m away, a Ministerial Consent wasapplied for by the client in order to have the any ground works for the foundation of the new wall and the dismantling of the existing wall monitored. It was also proposed to metal detect any spoil resulting from the construction of the wall. The monitoring was carried out from 16-20 October 2015. Nothing of archaeological merit was noted during the topsoil stripping or monitoring of the dismantling of the wall. No artefacts were recovered from the metal detection survey.
