Testing was carried out at Shannonpark in Carrigaline, Co. Cork to inform the Cultural Heritage Chapter of an Environmental Impact Assessment for a proposed residential development. It followed on from a geophysical survey undertaken by J.M. Leigh Surveys in May 2015 (15R0033).

A total of 37 trenches were excavated across the Phase 1 development lands targeting geophysical anomalies and greenfield areas. It was not possible to excavate three trenches in Area C as it was an active playing pitch (Carrigaline Rugby Football Club). Some of the trenches were shortened and spaced to avoid excavation under live electricity pylons.

Five sites of archaeological potential were identified during testing. Three burnt mounds were identified which reflect the known archaeological record of the surrounding landscape. Heat-affected gullies may prove to be peripheral activity associated with a nearby burnt mound. A kiln was found to the south of a former field boundary and west of a reclaimed wetland which probably dates to the post-medieval period.
