A total of nineteen test trenches were excavated across a pasture field following geophysical survey as a component of pre-planning site investigation works. Up to 29 small isolated features of archaeological potential were identified in the trenches, most were sub-circular or irregular in plan and less than 1.5m diameter. Two sherds of prehistoric pottery were revealed at the surface of one such feature which measured 0.9m by 0.85m at the surface.
A spread of burnt material comprising broken burnt stone was revealed measuring 4.1m in length and extending across the test trench. A small deposit of scorched clay was visible at the eastern end of the spread which extended beyond the edge of the trench. A ditched enclosure of approximately 14m internal diameter was revealed with a number of possibly associated internal features. A sherd of post-medieval glazed red earthenware was found at the surface of one of these features.
Given that these site investigation works were part of a pre-planning application the invasive investigation of the potential features was small in scale. If planning permission is granted for the development of this field excavation of all of the features identified will be required as well as identification of any other potential features.
