This excavation was carried out to investigate the wall of a possible prehistoric enclosure. The excavation was small in scale and the aim was to examine the structure of the enclosure wall and to record and retrieve any associated archaeological material.
Survey and excavation work at this enclosure is being carried out for a research project investigating a potential prehistoric settlement area and forms part of a PhD study. A preliminary note was published on this settlement area in 2010 by C Grant in 'The Other Clare', a journal published by the Shannon Archaeological and Historical Society.
Excavation revealed a substantial enclosure wall. A small amount of animal bone was recovered from underneath the wall and it is hoped that this will provide a radiocarbon date. A broken portion of a polished stone axe was also recovered.
