Test excavation was carried out in advance of proposed fencing at Moher Fort, Hags Head, Liscannor, Co. Clare. CL014-010002 (early 19th-century signal tower) and an Emergency Period look-out post are both dangerous structures that required fencing off to prevent public access. These monuments are situated on CL014-010001 (promontory fort – coastal). Given the potential negative impact of the concreted fence posts on the promontory fort, the locations of the fence footings were excavated.
The excavation consisted of 21 holes, each measuring approximately 0.3m by 0.3m and excavated to the level of the underlying bedrock. A metal detector was also used to examine the spoil. No archaeological features, deposits or artefacts were found.
