An archaeological evaluation was carried out prior to proposed restoration and extension works at Handel House, 53 Upper English Street, Armagh. The building is a registered grade B listed structure, HB 15/16/05 E, one of a terrace of 6 historic buildings, all grade B listed. The development site is also situated within three known battle sites and the historic settlement of Armagh, ARM 012:101.
Two test trenches were mechanically excavated across this area of the site. Trench 1 contained a single layer of fill material which consisted of a loose, black/dark brown gritty loam with frequent inclusions of concrete rubble and red brick fragments.
Trench 2 extended parallel to Trench 1 across the eastern end of the proposed extension. The northern half of the trench contained a single layer of fill material which consisted of a loose, black/dark brown gritty loam with frequent inclusions of concrete rubble and red brick fragments. Within this were a number of modern ceramic service pipes. The southern half of the trench contained a single layer of loose, black garden soil.
No evidence of any archaeological deposits was identified during the course of the evaluation.
