A desktop assessment and site walk-over survey of the proposed development site was carried out in 2013 as part of a programme of archaeological work to fulfill planning condition number 6. To fulfil condition number 7, the removal of topsoil from the site was subsequently monitored in September 2013 under licence AE/13/154 and again in July 2015 under licence AE/15/136. A metal detector was utilised both in advance of and during topsoil removal in order to maximise artefact recovery.
On initial examination of the site, it was clear that the site was disturbed by foundations from the previous buildings including farm buildings and a dwelling house at the east. Service trenches were noted across the site and modern debris including metal, plastic and crockery were noted. No finds relating to a battle site were recovered and nor were any sub-surface features noted.
