Pre-development archaeological evaluation works were undertaken during 26-28 May 2015 at a proposed development site at Leyland Road, Ballycastle, Co. Antrim, having been commissioned by Robinson McIlwaine Architects LLP. on behalf of their client Fold Housing Association Ltd.  The works undertaken are intended to provide additional information for the Northern Ireland Environment Agency: Historic Monuments Unit (NIEA:HMU) prior to making a Planning Decision under Planning Policy Statement 6: Built Heritage 4 (PPS 6:BH4) in response to a Planning Application for the development of the site for housing.

Twenty-five evaluation trenches comprising a total of c.1,025m of linear trenching were excavated within the boundaries of the proposed development area.  On-site evaluation works revealed undisturbed glacial subsoil throughout each of the trenches.

No archaeological features, remains or deposits were identified during the evaluation works, in addition to a series of stone-filled field drains and portions of field boundaries which previously sub-divided the area into smaller units of land.
