Pre-development test trenching was carried out at the site of proposed residential development at Nos 39 – 45 Church Road, Kells in response to an archaeological planning condition imposed upon the development. Planning conditions required a programme of works to be devised and agreed in order for the identification and mitigation of sub-surface archaeological remains which may survive within the site boundaries, with specific reference to ANT038:029, a possible souterrain which is recorded in SMR records as being located within the north-east corner of the development site.
The proposed development area consists of a brownfield site having once been occupied by a petrol station and agricultural merchant’s stores. A total of 5 test trenches were excavated in those areas of the site outside of the location of the petrol station fuel tanks/forecourt area where previous deep excavation and potential contaminants are assumed. Test trenching revealed that the entire development area had previously undergone extensive landscaping associated with the previous site use consisting of terracing of the rear (south) of the site and infilling of the front (south) of the site. No evidence of archaeological remains was uncovered within any of the test trenches excavated.
