Monitoring of topsoil removal was carried out at the site of a sub-surface interconnector power line and access road at Portmuck, Islandmagee, Co Antrim. The proposed scheme is located within an area of archaeological potential with specific reference to the close proximity of scheduled monument ANT041:003, the site of the historic Portmuck Castle, and the identification of previously unknown sub-surface archaeological remains associated with the insertion of an earlier interconnector power line in 2000.
Archaeological supervision of topsoil removal was carried out on 6–7 July. While a quantity of prehistoric struck flint was recovered from the topsoil itself, no sub-surface archaeological features or deposits were identified within the boundaries of the scheme.
