Pre-development test trenching was carried out at the site of a proposed housing scheme at lands to the east of 13 – 27 Victoria Street, Carrickfergus, in response to planning conditions imposed upon the development under PPS6 BH4 with specific reference to the development being located within a designated Area of Archaeological Potential.
A series of 3 machine-cut test trenches were excavated across the site at 10–12m intervals. Excavation revealed topsoil to be on average 0.3–0.4m deep overlying a natural orange boulder clay subsoil. No archaeological deposits were uncovered during the course of works.
