Monitoring of ground reduction associated with the construction of a new marshalling area to the south of Larne Harbour was carried out in response to planning conditions imposed upon the proposed development under Planning Policy guidelines PPS6 BH4. The proposed development is located adjacent to State Care monument Olderfleet Castle (ANT040:040), while previous archaeological works carried out in 2009 in the form of pre-development test trenching have confirmed the existence of prehistoric coastal archaeological occupation within the boundaries of the development area. Proposed development plans indicate that ground reduction works will not extend to the depth of these remains which will remain un-disturbed by the development and therefore be preserved in situ, however there remains the potential for further archaeological remains to survive around them.
Archaeological supervision of ground reduction was carried out ensure the appropriate preservation of the previously identified archaeological remains and also to allow for the identification of any other previously un-identified sub-surface archaeological remains within a 10m buffer zone beyond the area of previously identified archaeological activity.
