An archaeological evaluation was undertaken prior to proposed development works on lands belonging to NI Water in Stoneyford, Co Antrim. A single site of historic interest (IHR 7395) is located within the development area. This consists of the site of a beetling engine plant and associated mill pond and mill race. The beetling mill is first shown on the 1st edition OS map of 1834 and is recorded as ‘beetling engine’ on the 2nd edition of 1857. By the time of the 1904 edition only the mill pond and mill race are shown.
Monitoring of 31 test trenches was carried out in order to determine whether any features of archaeological significance may be present on the proposed development. All trenches were excavated using a back-acting mechanical digger fitted with a toothless bucket. Each test trench was excavated either to the level of undisturbed subsoil or archaeological strata, whichever was highest. The test trenches were a minimum of 2m in width and were, depending on topography, spaced either 15m or 20m apart.
No archaeological deposits were identified within the test trenches.
