2014:104 - KILCOOLE, Wicklow

The site is located on Lott Lane, Kilcoole, where it is proposed to build a single house on land adjacent to a medieval church and attached graveyard (WI013-029001–4). Previous investigations within the site revealed a single inhumation which was excavated during the current phase of works. An area approximately 10m x 10m was excavated around the burial location. The partial remains of a single inhumation (Burial 1) were recorded. Only the lower femurs (left and right) and upper tibia and fibulae (left and right) were articulated. All other bone had been truncated, a small quantity of which remained as disarticulated bone identified around the remains; however this also included animal bone. No further human remains, archaeological finds or features were present. The skeleton was a female adult, and the disarticulated bones indicated the remains of another female adult. Extensive testing of the area could find no direct link between the excavated remains and the adjacent church and graveyard. The date of the burial has not been determined. Two additional test trenches were excavated within the footprint of the proposed development.

No further human remains, archaeological finds or features were present.
