The site for the long-awaited upgrade to the Gael Scoil in Tramore lies in the townland of Crobally, on a hillside, sloping from north-west to south-east. In the area to be occupied by the new building, the drop in level diagonally across the site is 6m. The site is bounded at the north-east by a recently constructed road, which has a roundabout at either end. Archaeological testing in 2001 (licence 01E0900) revealed three small pits containing ‘undiagnostic lithics’ and some burnt bone, (N.M.S archaeological survey database, ref. WA026-083). The eleven trenches excavated showed a fairly uniform soil profile, with an average depth of 0.3m of topsoil (including sod), over clay-rich subsoil with many stones. Bedrock was close to the surface and was reached in two areas. No archaeological features were exposed and all stray finds from the plough soil were modern or early modern sherds of pottery or glass. No archaeological features or finds of significance were disturbed by the test trenches, which comprehensively covered the area to be built on. All trenches measured 10m in length with the exception of Trench 11 which was 9m.
