The development site relates to the public realm works located within Dungannon town centre in County Tyrone and will see improvements to Market Square, Castle Hill, Irish Street, and Church Street in the form of resurfacing of carriageways and pedestrian walkways. It is located within the historic settlement of Dungannon (TYR 054:046) with the site of O’Neil’s castle (TYR 054:017) that dates to the 14th century, within the immediate vicinity.
As part of the planning conditions attached to the site, monitoring of the works was required. Between February and November 2014 site works associated with this project were intermittingly monitored. The majority of this work has been relatively non-invasive in terms of ground penetration, removing only the present ground surface. In most cases the underlying ground was found to be heavily disturbed and truncated by modern services. Within Market Square, in the area associated with the new location of the cenotaph, the remains of a cobbled surface, a pit/well, a culvert and a linear feature were uncovered. With the exception of the cobbled surface the other features were preserved in situ as they were uncovered at formation level. However, a sherd of post-medieval pottery was recovered from the linear feature.
