Testing was undertaken along the route of the Thurles Regional Water Supply Scheme, at ten locations in North Tipperary. It followed a previous desktop assessment report carried out by Byrne, Mullins and Associates (Byrne, 2003).
Test Areas 2, 3 and 10 were not tested as there was a design change and the pipe was laid by means of directional drilling and not in an open cut trench. Test Areas 6 and 9 were not tested in advance of pipe-laying as notice of the pipe-laying was not given by the contractor.
Testing at Areas 1, 4, 5 and 7 failed to identify any archaeological features.
The only area that produced features of potential archaeological significance was in Area 8 in Holycross. These consisted of linear features that may represent an extension of a possible early medieval/medieval field system identified in the fields to the south during a previous geophysical survey associated with another development. Possible pits may represent later disturbance.
