Pre-development test trenching was undertaken at Monksland, Athlone in advance of the construction of a biopharmaceutical facility. The 17ha site is situated on the outskirts of Athlone town to the north of the railway line and the M6. The nearest archaeological monument is a ringfort (RO052-002) located 650m to the south-west of the site. A corn-drying kiln (RO052-031002) and a single inhumation (RO052005) were excavated to the immediate west of this ringfort during the construction work on the M6 in 2007.
A total of 16 trenches were excavated to the surface of the natural ground and a considerable number of non-archaeological features including cultivation furrows and recent surface burning associated with gorse removal were exposed. All of the exposed linear features were interpreted as having an agricultural function based on their shared dimensions and orientation. No features or finds of archaeological significance were uncovered.
