An excavation was carried out at Curleyland/Mill Land 1, which was located along the route of the N51-R164 Junction at Ballyboy in Co. Meath. The site at Curleyland/Mill Land 1 was identified during advance testing undertaken in 2013 by Meath County Council (Roycroft, 2013; licence ref.: 13E209).
Curleyland/Mill Land 1 comprised of two shallow spreads of burnt material. A very small quantity of burnt bone was retrieved from each feature, which has been identified as cremated human remains. It is suggested that these spreads represent token cremation deposits however their shallow nature and the very small weight of bone present indicates significant truncation and disturbance.
A sample of hazel charcoal (0.1g) from C5, possible cremation deposit, returned an AMS result of 2880±2 BP (UBA 26996). The two-sigma (2σ) calibrated result for this was 1192–938 BC (QUB, Appendix 2.4), indicating a date in the late Bronze Age period for the feature.
