Pre-development testing took place on the site of a proposed wind farm at Ballykinava and Cuilmore, Co. Mayo between 19 May and 4 June 2014. The development comprises the construction of 7 wind turbines, upgrade of existing and provision of new internal access roads including the upgrading of site access junction and provision of new site access junction, provision of an anemometry mast, peat disposal areas, underground electricity cabling, temporary construction compound and all ancillary site works. MA102-033 (Ringfort – rath) is located within the development boundary, in the north-east extent of the site. The only wind farm infrastructure proposed for this area is ducting for the underground electricity cable. A farm track runs north-east/south-west immediately adjacent to the monument but it is proposed to route the electricity cable through green field in order to avoid impact on the monument and to respect the 30m area of archaeological constraint recommended for recorded monuments.
Twenty-six test trenches were opened on the sites of the proposed wind farm infrastructure, including a staggered trench through the green field section of the cable route in the vicinity of MA102-033. No archaeology was found.
